Arthur Winslow Pierce served as Headmaster of Dean Academy in Franklin, Massachusetts from 1897 to 1934. He married Lydia Ray on June 25, 1903.

 

Nicknamed “Awpie,” Pierce was much beloved by the students who crossed his path, so much so that when he died of a sudden heart attack in 1934, letters of consolation from former students cascaded into the school form across the globe. The walkway from Dean Hall to the road at Dean College is known as Awpie Way to this day.
